Review: New CreatACard App for AmericanGreetings

Design and Mail Your Own Card...Even Your 1yo Can Do It

August 26, 2014

My family was offered the opportunity to use American Greetings new CreatACard Ipad App.  Though I own an Ipad, my 5yo and 3yo are far better at using it.  Once I easily downloaded the free App at http://www.americangreetings.com/creatacard my 5yo was able to handle it entirely on his own.

The app allows you to make a card entirely of your own drawings OR you can choose a card to add pictures and embellishments on.  Sean created his own card first, picking a variety of tools such as painbrushes, crayons, markers, stickers, stamps, and pencils, with a wide rainbow of varied color choices.  He easily wrote his own name, and stored the card for me to purchase later.  The cost to purchase, 3.49 + postage to anywhere world-wide, which is equivalent to what you’ll receive for a generic grocery store card, but this one is obviously far more personal.  Plus you don’t need to trek down to the store, the post office for a stamp, and remember to mail it.  This is all done for you at your fingertips.

My 3yo tried it next, and while he needed a little assistance with choosing the different writing tools, he was able to draw and write as easily as his big brother.  He’s quite addicted to the color yellow, and with the three different color yellows and multitude of different tools, he was able to create his own unique picture.  He was even able to write his own name by tracing over my “pencil” writing with his yellow “crayon.”  Won’t Grammy and Grampy be impressed when they see receive that card!

Even my 1yo could easily play in the app, making her own style of finger drawings.  The 5yo begged to go back onto the app when we were done, so it’s also a fun ‘treat’ for him to play in, even if we’re not planning to send the card.

As the children needed to head to nap, Ipad-challenged me took over the app and played around, too.  I choose the option to use their pre-designed cards.  There a good array of options, including Thomas the Tank and Strawberry Shortcake, I was able to quickly and easily add pictures of our family OR take a picture on-the-spot with the Ipad.  I was really quite impressed with the ease of doing this….I would bet my elderly relatives could do this without stressing.  Of course I think they can maneuver an Ipad better than I can in the first place, but anyway….

Once the cards are finished and saved, the app tells your child to go get an adult for purchase.  In order to go into the storefront portion of the app, the adult must swipe two fingers down the Ipad, which helps prevent a child from inadvertently (or purposely haha) ordering cards.
