Review: Pumpkin Train at Danbury Railroad Museum

By Tracy Gallagher, Hopewell Junction Macaroni Kid October 14, 2014
It had been a few years since we took the kids to the Danbury railroad museums pumpkin train but we braved the dreary day this past Saturday and headed over.  My two youngest boys came (18 months and 6 years old) and I personally think they are the perfect age for this experience. Older children may find it less entertaining but my boys had a good time.

We took a short train ride within the rail yard on a vintage  train out to the "patch". It is not an actual pumpkin patch but a small area within the rail yard with many different pumpkin sizes the kids can pick from. The pumpkins are included in the price of admission so my 6 year old HAD to pick the biggest one he could find. He almost dropped it and told me "wow, that was heavier then I expected!" After some photo ops with various wood cut outs it was back on the train to ride back to the other side of the years so we could explore the trains in the rail yard. The maybe 5 minute ride each way, was just the right amount of time for our 18 month old to sit still and look out the window. He sat quietly with his pumpkin, while pointing out the windows to the other trains. It was very cute to see him so interested in his surroundings.

After the ride, visitors have the option of exploring some of the other vintage trains in the rail yard, heading back into the museum to see the model trains many of which are working models and the kids can make the displays move. We chose to the the models before our ride and climb on the vintage trains afterward but visitors can do which ever they would like. This time of year there is also themed coloring pages, crafts, tattoos, snacks etc. You could really spend an hour or so just doing the other activities. Don't forget about the gift shop for your train lover. They have some very interesting gifts and books to purchase if interested.
