VFW, Scouts Visit Castle Point VA Hospital

December 16, 2014

Cub Scouts from Pack 1, Boy Scouts from Troop 1, and some local Girl Scouts joined members of Brewster VFW Post 672 on Saturday, December 6th at Castle Point VA Hospital to host a holiday party for some of the long-term patients/Veterans there.  The Scouts got to meet a number of Veterans - including some WWII Veterans, a population that is quickly dwindling - as they served them dessert, coffee and other goodies.  Post Adjutant Harry Sherblom, who coordinates the event, said that, "The Brewster VFW's mission is to support local veterans. We've been visiting Castle Point during the holidays for many, many years now, and the Scouts have always been there to help us out.  Its great to see the Scouts interacting with the residents at Castle Point, and the kids do such a good job every year." The VFW also holds an outdoor cook-out at Castle Point VA Hospital in the summer, and the Scouts help out at that event as well.

The Brewster VFW organizes the annual Memorial Day Parade & Wreath Laying Ceremony, as well as the Veterans Day Ceremony in downtown Brewster.  They also sponsor scholarships and awards programs for local students, scouts and teachers, including the Voice of Democracy and Patirot’s Pen scholarship contests, and Teacher of the Year and Scout of the Year awards.
