Craft: Homemade Musical Instruments

Rain Sticks and Tambourines

By Sabrina Condon Macaroni Kid Brewster-Mahopac-Carmel March 6, 2012
Once again, we are recycling and reusing. (and spending little to NO money!)

The two homemade instruments we're making this week use almost the same materials.

Materials:
  • Toilet paper roll for rain stick
  • 2 paper plates for a tambourine
  • Construction paper
  • Tape (wide, packaging tape is easiest)
  • Beans or rice
  • yard, string, or ribbon
  • Decorative Materials (foam shapes, scrap paper, markers, etc.)

Rain Stick

1. Fill the paper towel roll or toilet paper roll with some rice

2. Wrap 1 piece of construction paper around toilet paper roll, making sure both ends are well covered.

3. Place tape over any seams

4. Decorate!

Tambourine

1. Put rice on one plate

2. Place the two face plates together and tape edges together.  You can also glue and then staple onto that.  Or punch holes and weave a ribbon/string/yard through it.

3. Decorate!
