Craft: Recycled Crayons

By Tracy Gallagher, Macaroni Kid Brewster May 8, 2012
Very easy and fun craft for kids!
We used a 24 cup mini muffin tray, but you can use a standard muffin tin or metal cookie cutters with wax paper under them (placed on try for a stable bottom)
Find the old, broken and "naked" crayons as my kids call them around the house. If you don't have any or enough to make the desired amount of new crayons, peel and break the colors you would like.
Spray the tin or cookie cutters with non-stick spray and fill with broken, peeled crayons. Put in the oven pre-heated at 275 for about 8 minutes. Some generic crayons will take longer to melt but keep an eye on them it won't take long. Once melted remove from the oven and let cool. Take a toothpick and swirl the colors if you want or leave alone to cool as is. You can place in the fridge or freezer to speed up the process.
Once cooled, flip the pan over and remove the new crayons. I did tap mine on the bottom to help remove them. If you choose the cookie cutter method, just peel off the wax paper after the crayons are cooked and pop out of the mold.
These "new" crayons are in instant hit in my house. Not only has Nathaniel been coloring with them, he is also enjoying building towers with them! I Love recycling :)
