Community Support: Help Save Tilly Foster Farm

November 26, 2013

Many of our readers have been attending fun events held at Tilly Foster Farm, located on Route 312 (near Home Depot) in Brewster.  Every day the farm is open and FREE for families to visit the critically endangered farm animals, including

  • ·         Randall Lineback Cattle
  • ·         Mammoth Jackstock Donkey
  • ·         American Blue Rabbits
  • ·         Pilgrim Geese
  • ·         Indian Runner Ducks
  • ·         Narragansett Turkey
  • ·         Delaware Chicken
  • ·         American Guinea Hogs
  • ·         American Cream Draft Horse

In addition, children and their families enjoy checking out the antique farm equipment in Tilly Foster’s Museum.  And if you’re walking near the upper fields, be sure to look at the breathtaking views.  This beautiful property is protected watershed property, overseen by the Watershed Agricultural Council.

Where farms such as Muscoot, located in Westchester County, receive county employees and financial support, Preserve Putnam has created this World Class Museum of animals and equipment through donations primarily raised outside Putnam County.  Unfortunately the operating costs, which are upwards of $250k annually, are too much to cover on donations alone.  Preserve Putnam is sadly in the process of relinquishing control of the property back to the County.

It is unclear what will happen to the animals, antique equipment, and all the buildings and infrastructure painstakingly restored and implemented these past five years.  After the transfer to County control is complete, it is also unclear if the farm will remain free to the public, or even accessible to the public.

We are soliciting letters and emails for submission to the County, the legislators, and others to find a way to keep this amazing resource available to the residents of Putnam County and surrounding areas.  If you would like to submit an email to us, we will gladly collect and send them onto the appropriate groups and individuals on your behalf.

A drafted letter is included below, or you can use your own creativity and choose to submit it to us or directly to the proper places.  We’ve also included a list of names and addresses if you’d like to send letters directly.

To Whom It May Concern:

I am a Putnam County resident, located at <address>, and value the resources available to my family in Putnam County.  My family is grateful for the thousands of volunteer hours Preserve Putnam has coordinated along with the hard work and dedication to repair the farms infrastructure and care for the endangered farm animals.  It is our hope that Putnam County will find a way to help fund Preserve Putnam and keep this beautiful resource available to its residents.

Electronically Signed,
