Memorial Day honors the men and women who made the ultimate sacrifice and died while serving in the U.S. military. Originally known as Decoration Day, it originated in the years following the Civil War and became an official federal holiday in 1971. Many Americans observe Memorial Day by visiting cemeteries, attending memorials, holding family gatherings and participating in parades. Unofficially, it marks the beginning of the summer season.
Putnam has several parades throughout the county including Brewster, Mahopac, Patterson and Putnam Lake. You may also visit Veterans Memorial Park in Carmel to see various memorials and monuments on the grounds. (Note: Veterans Memorial Park has a Museum open on Wednesdays and by appointment.)
