Doing Good in the Neighborhood

By Liza Rodriguez Krontilik November 8, 2022

Thanksgiving and the holidays are a special time to reflect and take stock on the past year.  In a season of good cheer, there are those less fortunate.  If you are in a position to help, please consider the following organizations and opportunities in the area to lend a helping hand.

Now through November 14th: CAP Thanksgiving- CAP is seeking donations of turkeys and $25 gift cards to help local families celebrate Thanksgiving.

Now through November 22nd: Midnight Run- St James Religious Ed and their 8th grade families are collecting gently used or new men's and women's clothing for a service project. Items you can donate include: hooded sweatshirts, long sleeve shirts, jeans, sweatpants, jackets, coats, rain gear, backpacks, sneakers and boots. They are looking for newly packaged socks and undies too.  Travel sized toiletries are also appreciated.  All items will benefit homeless men and women.

Now through December 12th: Patterson Library is accepting new, unwrapped toys for the Marine Corps Reserve's Toys-for-Tots drive from November 1 through December 12. These toys will be distributed to local children.

December 11th: Holiday Bash- Join us for a fun filled afternoon!  Santa will be here with his sled for photos, courtesy for Kismet by Caryn / Hudson Valley Balloon Girl!  Face Painting by Cheyenne Monacelli!   We’ll be collecting new, unopened toys for TOYS FOR TOTS for local families right in our neighborhood!

December 12th: Honor Loved Ones with Luminaries- The Ty Louis Campbell Foundation for childhood cancer research will once again light luminaries along the walkways of Pawling Village leading up to a golden “hope” tree in the gazebo. This ceremonious event is in dedication of all who have suffered a life-threatening diagnosis (in honor of the fighters, in support of the survivors, and in memory of the angels).  All luminary purchases support the Ty Louis Campbell Foundation in their mission to cure childhood cancer.

December 16th to 18th: World's Largest Holiday Light Display- Every year, for the past 27 years, Tim Gay and his family open their front yard to the local community and beyond. Visitors to the LaGrange home are invited to drive through the Guinness Book of World Records winner for largest residential display of lights, which has been meticulously synchronized to music, with new features added every year. Total light count is now about 687,000 and there are over 250 songs choreographed to the display. Stay in the comfort and warmth of your car as you drive through the circular driveway, while taking in the spirit of the holidays and supporting the Ty Louis Campbell Foundation.  Donations are appreciated! Volunteers will be standing by with buckets to drop your spare change in as you pass through. As a result of the Gay Family's generosity, the ERDAJT light display has raised thousands of dollars for the Ty Louis Campbell Foundation.

Now through January 5th: Coat Drive for Kids at Patterson Library: Teen Leadership Council volunteers will be holding a coat drive to benefit Putnam CAP. They will be collecting new children’s coats with tags, from November 5 through December 4.

Now through January 1st: Brewster Rotary Coat Drive- Bring new or gently used coats to one of three locations:

  • Applebee's at 115 Independent Way in Brewster (Receive 15% off your bill at this location)
  • Heidi's Inn at 1270 Route 22 in Brewster
  • McLean Agency at 1663 Route 22 in Brewster

There are so many ways to give such as donating clothing, sharing your time or providing gift cards to those in need.  Get the whole family involved and make this time of year more meaningful.  Please share other local opportunities and organizations that I might have missed at mackidbrewster@macaronikid.com.  Thank you!
