The Freight House Cafe- Mahopac

February 24, 2025

Nestled behind Putnam Music & Salon Uccelli is a hidden gem that’s equal parts cozy and charming—The Freight House Café. My husband and I stumbled upon this delightful spot on a chilly Saturday morning while searching for a warm place to sit, grab a bite, and enjoy a quality cup of coffee. From the moment we stepped inside, we knew we had found something special.

The Freight House Café didn’t disappoint—far from it! My chai latte was a perfect blend of spice and creaminess, warming me up from the inside out. I opted for the peanut butter toast topped with bananas and drizzled with honey, a simple yet satisfying treat that hit the spot. My husband went for the breakfast burrito, which was packed with flavor and the kind of heartiness you want to start your day with. Every bite felt thoughtful and homemade, and the friendly service only added to the experience.

But the charm of The Freight House Café goes beyond just good food and drinks. The space itself has an incredible history. Built in the spring of 1872, the building was originally the first constructed for the New York Central and Hudson River Railroad branch. For more than 50 years, it served as a key stop for both freight and passengers traveling from Golden’s Bridge to Grand Central Terminal. Today, that rich history is woven into the café’s rustic, inviting ambiance, making it a place where you can feel connected to the past while enjoying the comforts of the present.

Whether you’re looking for a cozy nook to sip coffee, a delicious breakfast to start your day, or simply a place with character and a story to tell, The Freight House Café is a must-visit. We’ll definitely be back!
